Ignacio from Weeds is everywhere!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 9th, 2011 by laura – Be the first to comment

Just the other day, I was surprised to see Hemky Madera, better known as Ignacio from Weeds, starring in an ad for Progressive. Tonight, I looked up from my dinner of Red Baron pizza (a step up from my usual dinner of Totino’s Party Pizza) to see that same taser-loving gangster staring back at me, this time in a commercial for Best Buy. Is there anything this lovable henchman can’t sell?

Ignacio from Weeds in a Progressive ad?

One of my favorite character in Showtime’s Weeds is Ignacio, the hardened thug with a penchant for Milo and Otis. Now the actor who plays Ignacio, Hemky Madera, is branching out and doing commercials, apparently, and I spotted him in this recent Progressive ad as a motorcycle dude. It’s hard to imagine him as anything but a gangster type, but I guess by playing a biker he’s staying in that same bad boy realm. Either way, I’m glad to see him getting work!

Is Hot Pockets trying to rip off Party Down? Not cool

Wow, it’s almost perfect that a big budget commercial decides to capitalize on something all the smart young kids are into and ends up missing the point completely. In the awesome but short-lived TV show Party Down, the main character, Henry Pollard, is a washed up actor who is best known for, yep, a commercial. This beer ad, his one claim to fame, features him uttering the catchphrase “Are we having fun yet?!” and haunts him wherever he goes forever after in the form of random people requesting that he say the phrase.

Granted, Hot Pockets dropped the “yet,” but it still kind of kills me inside.

Here’s the Party Down version just because.

Now this is a new advertising strategy

This is a new one: having a subject of derision like Pauly D from Jersey Shore give an anti-endorsement to your product. Whatever works, Miracle Whip, but after this and your “Don’t Be So Mayo” campaign, I’m starting to think you’re having self-esteem issues. I still prefer Stephen Colbert’s mayo ad.

Sarah Hyland from Modern Family in an Olive Garden ad?

Whoa, weird. I guess The Olive Garden is cashing in now that Sarah Hyland, the oldest daughter from Modern Family, is famous, just like with Elisabeth Moss and Excedrin. Great, now I’m hungry for Olive Garden.

Watch the video here! (embedding didn’t work, boo)

The music in the Trésor by Lancôme ad reminds me of Lost

There’s this commercial with Penélope Cruz that keeps playing, for Trésor perfume by Lancôme, and I swear, every time I listen to it, I get a little choked up inside because it reminds me of the sad scenes in Lost. Am I the only one?

I finally figured out who that horrible Cinnamon Toast Crunch blogger reminds me of

Have you seen this obnoxious-as-hell commercial for the admittedly tasty cereal Cinnamon Toast Crunch? Warning: it will make you never want to use the internet again.

Well I finally figured out who this bitch reminds me of! Did you see that episode of Intervention where that girl Allison is addicted to huffing computer cleaner? Check it out. It’s totally the same person! That explains why she falls over after eating her Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I guess.

Bisquick’s Blueberry Pancake song

Every time this Bisquick commercial comes on, with its ridiculous “Blueberry Pancake” song (higher quality audio version here), I laugh because it reminds me so much of Sarah Silverman’s song “Pancakes Please.” Here are the two videos so you can compare for yourself (sorry about the low video quality).

Gossip Girl’s Holland plays golf in a Kohl’s ad

sherrisaum

Yes, it’s yet another “Is that (fill in name of actor) in a (fill in brand name) commercial?” post. I can’t help it if every C-list actor out there is trying to cash in by becoming a corporate whore. I would do the same!

Anyway, actress Sherri Saum, who I know as the devious Holland in Gossip Girl (the woman who lives downstairs from Lily and pretended to have an affair with Rufus), is the new face of Kohl’s. I don’t know if my first choice for spokesperson would be a woman who, at least in this role, is synonymous with being a bitchy skank. But why not? Even slutty downstairs neighbors need someplace to shop. Kohl’s: The Homewrecker Store.

P.S. I don’t know what the YouTube video poster was smoking when they thought that was Flo from the Progressive ads opposite Sherri.

Is that Dr. Pierre Chang in a Bud Light ad?

pierre chang

As a major Lost fan, I was shocked to see what looked like Dr. Pierre Chang (aka actor François Chau), the mysterious Dharma Initiative video narrator and father of Miles, starring in a commercial for Bud Light. He’s still playing a scientist with that John O’Hurley-ish dry wit, so it’s even more Lost-seeming.

Finally! The SpongeBob sponge infomercial

I have been trying to track down this commercial for a while, and success is finally mine! Okay, it was a pretty stupid ad to begin with, but I still feel a sense of satisfaction in having achieved my goal. Presenting….the Spongetech SpongeBob Sponge.

Stephen Colbert’s fake Miracle Whip commercial

Stephen Colbert presented a brilliant imitation ad the other day on his fine comedy news show, The Colbert Report. He was complaining about the cool, youthful approach Miracle Whip is using in their commercials of late, and he made his own awesome version, entitled “The Mayolution Will Not Be Televised.”

The Colbert Report Mon – Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c
The Mayo-lution Will Not Be Televised

Colbert Report Full Episodes Political Humor Michael Moore

This is the original Miracle Whip ad in question. It’s pretty dumb. The ad slogan, “Don’t be so mayo,” also sounds suspiciously like a ripoff of Baskin-Robbins’ “Don’t be so vanilla” campaign, which I discussed a while back.

I like Stephen’s version better.

Comedy Central’s juvenile Secret Girlfriend promos

Posted in Uncategorized on October 1st, 2009 by laura – 1 Comment

The website of the new Comedy Central series “Secret Girlfriend” says that the show is for single dudes in their early- to mid-20s, but from the look of these promos, they really mean 14 year old boys. I mean, pitching a tent? A cat and a rooster? Plus, they’re confusing as all hell. Is this a sketch comedy show, a sitcom, or MANswers-like infotainment? What is it???

Anyway, you can check out all of the punbearable clips at the official website, but here are just a couple to get you hot and bothered (dammit, now they’ve gotten to me too).
