The Shake Weight infomercial

Posted in Uncategorized on October 28th, 2009 by laura – 1 Comment

Jon Stewart did a great bit involving this bizarre shaking exercise weight commercial on The Daily Show last night, and I just had to share the glory of this amazing product. This vibrating barbell is called “The Shake Weight,” and its ad is quite, er, suggestive.

Apparently, there’s also a female version, which is just as hilariously wrong and pornographic-looking.

The Atheist subway ad from New York

million new yorkers

You may have heard about this on the news, even though I can hardly see why it would be such a big deal. I’m just happy that any sort of atheist voice is being heard in the religion-dominated media. Here’s an article from the New York Times’ City Room regarding the subway ad. Thanks to Richard Dawkins’ website for the above image.

The Quiznos hillbilly hot tub is a joke

Quiznos portrays a DIY hillbilly hot tub in their latest commercial, but if you ask me, these hillbillies don’t know jack about constructing homemade jacuzzis.

This MANswers clip attempts to answer the age old question of how to construct the best instant hot tub.

Stephen Colbert’s fake Miracle Whip commercial

Stephen Colbert presented a brilliant imitation ad the other day on his fine comedy news show, The Colbert Report. He was complaining about the cool, youthful approach Miracle Whip is using in their commercials of late, and he made his own awesome version, entitled “The Mayolution Will Not Be Televised.”

The Colbert Report Mon – Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c

This is the original Miracle Whip ad in question. It’s pretty dumb. The ad slogan, “Don’t be so mayo,” also sounds suspiciously like a ripoff of Baskin-Robbins’ “Don’t be so vanilla” campaign, which I discussed a while back.

I like Stephen’s version better.

Does the Water Jet remind you of anything?

The new commercial for the Water Jet hose attachment (it basically accomplishes the same thing as putting your thumb over the hose) suggests that it’s a miracle cleaning product. But while describing the product, the commercial (which is available on the Water Jet website) shows the water surging through a cross section diagram of the hose in a way that seems almost…sexual.

Phallic hardware is hardly a new invention, but even their bonus attachment ‘head’ looks…well, see for yourself:

Ad of the Week is no more

Posted in Uncategorized on October 13th, 2009 by laura – Be the first to comment

So I’m just giving you loyal readers the heads up that I’m retiring my “Ad of the Week” feature. It was fun while it lasted, but as you would say to a college boyfriend, I feel it’s time to move on.

But stay tuned for more awesome commercial-related content as per usual! It may make you want to consume, but what doesn’t these days?

Let’s talk about Reese Witherspoon’s perfume ad

Posted in Uncategorized on October 12th, 2009 by laura – 2 Comments

I just saw Avon’s new commercial for the perfume “In Bloom,” which was apparently created by Sweet Home Alabama actress and sometime Jake Gyllenhaal canoodler Reese Witherspoon. And, I know, perfume ads are always cheesy (see every Britney Spears designer fragrance commercial ever made). But for the love of all things tacky, did they have to make it so ridiculous and over-the-top?

They should have gotten David Lynch to direct it. Then the cheeriness would be tinged with the suspicion that a darker side is lurking just beneath the surface, like in this Bambi-themed Playstation 2 ad he did a while back.

The Maytag MXC-style commercial disturbs me

I understand that Maytag is trying to evoke Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC), or perhaps the American ripoff version, Wipeout, in their new ad. They show competitors getting messy in substances that resemble everyday stains you might get on your clothes. But what’s up with the blue liquid they spray on that one chick? The only place I’m used to seeing blue liquid like that is in commercials involving urine or menstrual blood. Please tell me that’s not what they’re spraying on this poor woman.

Ad of the Week: The banned Vitamin Water ads

Posted in Uncategorized on October 7th, 2009 by laura – Be the first to comment

Coca-Colas-Glaceau-Vitami-001

Parent company Coca-Cola’s ads for Glaceau Vitamin Water are under attack, according to The Guardian. The ads in question have been challenged due to their ‘misleading’ claims about their nutritional value. I would say nobody really takes those beverages’ claims of benefits like energy, relaxation, and power seriously, but with America you never know.

Do these ads look threatening to you?

The new Sweet Million bunnies ad

Posted in Uncategorized on October 5th, 2009 by laura – 2 Comments

The last ad for New York Lottery’s “Sweet Million” game was extremely adorable. But this one is giving it a run for its money. Bunnies at the fair! Who could ask for more?

Comedy Central’s juvenile Secret Girlfriend promos

Posted in Uncategorized on October 1st, 2009 by laura – 1 Comment

The website of the new Comedy Central series “Secret Girlfriend” says that the show is for single dudes in their early- to mid-20s, but from the look of these promos, they really mean 14 year old boys. I mean, pitching a tent? A cat and a rooster? Plus, they’re confusing as all hell. Is this a sketch comedy show, a sitcom, or MANswers-like infotainment? What is it???

Anyway, you can check out all of the punbearable clips at the official website, but here are just a couple to get you hot and bothered (dammit, now they’ve gotten to me too).
