Ad of the Week: Perdue Chicken and killer hamsters

Posted in Uncategorized on May 7th, 2009 by laura – 2 Comments

I was trying to find my favorite new Perdue ad (the one where Mr. Perdue warns a chicken named Gladys not to eat any candy as he takes her hidden stash, and she balks–or bawks–at his suggestion) when I came across this older ad. Needless to say, it caught my attention.

Finally an ad I don’t hate, and it’s for my favorite product

I could pretty much go through life only making two purchases: White Castle burgers and Miller High Life. It’s by far the cheapest decent (i.e. not Natty Ice) beer at the convenience store I frequent, and they have those awesome points you can save up for merchandise. So far I’ve earned two tank tops, a set of bottle cap magnets and an iron-on patch, and for my next purchase I have my heart set on the mini outdoor grill.

More importantly, Miller High Life knows the value of good advertising. Their latest ad campaign is not only funny, it’s not obnoxious! I genuinely don’t mind their commercials. And this one tearing apart other Super Bowl ads is pretty right on.

Bladder control medication seems like a bad idea

There have been so many bladder control ads on TV lately, and not just for adult diapers like Tena (lousy quality video, only for reference). Now they’re advertising drugs that suppress your urges to pee, like Enablex. To me, Enablex sounds like something Lindsay Lohan would slip her friends, but that’s a whole other point. Once they start rattling off the side effects of relaxing your pee muscles, I have to wonder who would actually go for such a “cure.” Sounds like bad news all around.

Considering all the constipation relief products that have been so hot lately, all these bladder control ads beg the question, as posed by my boyfriend, “People want to poop more but urinate less?”

Here is one of Enablex’s questionable ads, wherein a bunch of water balloons have a high school reunion. They’re asking for trouble, if you ask me.

Why IS the runway covered in whipped cream, IHOP?

whipped-cream-record

I can’t seem to locate a copy of the latest IHOP commercial for their Strawberry Festival special, but it’s pure advertising genius. It portrays two pilot types in an airplane, attempting to land. One of them then utters the best question I’ve ever heard on an IHOP commercial: “Why is the runway covered in whipped cream?” Why indeed. This man speaks for us all.

It turns out that the runway is covered in whipped cream because it’s the Strawberry Festival. I’m not sure if this is implying that the pilots are going to scatter strawberries along the runway from their plane, thus creating a disgusting engine oil shortcake, or what. But I appreciate the concept.

All I could find was this press release for the aforementioned Strawberry Festival, which is a good source for such funny statistics as the following: A 2007 study from The California Strawberry Commission confirmed what many taste buds know, that strawberries are the favorite fruit of both kids and adults alike. And, over the last 50 years, more than 155 million pounds of sweet strawberry glaze have topped IHOP treats — enough to fill 1,570 Olympic-sized swimming pools.”

And doesn’t it seem kind of dangerous to cover a runway in whipped cream? Sounds like the makings for another Munich Air Disaster situation.

The new Midol ad is setting women back decades

Woman have worked hard to overcome the stereotype that we’re whiny, naggy, shrill, and obsessed with our periods. Then along comes this Midol ad to erase all of our progress with one sentence: “My uterus is falling out!!”

Terrifying Midol Ad

Besides not doing anything for our cause, that uterus statement is disturbing. What kind of cycles is this woman having? She might want to see a doctor about that.

Mastercard’s neutered version of Mr. Bill

I loved the Mr. Bill sketches when I was growing up, so in a way I’m happy to see the character revived in the new Mastercard ads. But this isn’t the Mr. Bill I know and love. He keeps finding a reason to be happy that all these terrrible things keep happening to him, which kind of ruins the joke. Maybe it’s because they didn’t want the commercial to seem too negative? Whatever the reason, it’s lame.

Prada’s “Trembled Blossoms”

Now, I know fashion is a world that’s all about expensive marketing campaigns that make little to no sense, but this is just going too far. Prada made a multi-part animated film about their latest line, and it’s basically a painfully long acid trip brought to life. I really don’t know what to make of it. See the madness for yourself…I’m not sure if this is part 1 or the whole deal because it seems like it was a contest of some kind, but this is probably all you’ll be able to stomach anyway.

Ad of the Week: David Lynch’s Gucci by Gucci commercial

Thanks to Chris for pointing this ad out to me!

David Lynch is best known for his bizarre yet strangely enticing feature films, as well as a wealth of other pursuits (visual art, music, transcendental meditation instruction, even amateur meteorology), but he also directed this recent Gucci ad for their new fragrance. The scent is aptly titled “Gucci by Gucci,” and the spot is…well, it’s by David Lynch. Enjoy!
